Fizzy Flow Review – Scrufizzer

By Ella December

“Best from the west.”

West London MC Scrufizzer boldly proclaims on his latest mixtape – Fizzy Flow. The MC has been creating quite a buzz ever since his emergence on the grime scene. His rapid flow has gained him acclaim and is reminscent of the golden age of grime. He’s also collaborated with grime veterans such as Dizzee Rascal and Newham Generals. So the question is with his recent offering does he prove that he is the future of grime?

Scrufizzer starts off with Fizzy Flow as in introdutcion. As the starter track its a little bit too long and busy. Its also a little too long. He compensates for the dissapointing first track with following track Boom Refix.

Boom Refix is brimming with energy, fast flows and vivacious voices. Its a good demonstration of his talents. He repeats this again with Fizzy In Paris.

Fizzy In Paris is Scrufizzer doing his take on the heavily rapped on N**gas In Paris. On the tracklist, I was worried about this because Scrufizzer is primarily a grime musician. It would seem easy for him to falter on a rap beat. Instead he suprises the listener by making the rap beat his own by switching up his famous flows.

Scrufizzer keeps the good suprises coming with Lost Ones Cover, a cover of Lauryn Hill’s song. Scrufizzer uses the cover to drop some social commentary. He raps about the problems with stop and search “Because dons are geting pulled for wearing hooded jumpers” and he also comments on the £9000 university fees rise “People wanna go to to uni tho’/As usual but can’t afford or take out or pay for a student loan.” Lauryn Hill’s chorous sounds poingnant next to the thoughtful verses.

On Get Away one of the highlights of the mixtape, Scrufizzer continues to show another side to him. He opens up about the troubles in his life which helps to make a touching track.

Overall, Fizzy Flow is a good effort and shows that Scrufizzer is a talented star to watch out for. It also shows theres more to the MC than just fast-paced rapping, that he can be introspective. In the future hopefully he doesn’t use as much hectic production, so his lyrics can be clearly heard.
